Ants are some of the hardest working insects in the world. So I wanted to find out how ants breathe? I wanted to learn if ants have lungs, how they breathe, and if they can breathe underwater.

How do ants breathe?

Ants breathe through a system of tiny holes called spiracles located on their body, to be exact, on their abdomen. These spiracles open and close to regulate the flow of air into and out of the ant’s body. When the ant needs air, it opens its spiracles and can take in air from the outside. When it does this, the air goes directly into their gasters. The air then travels through their body to their antennae and other organs, such as their heart, brain, and muscles.

An ant’s spiracles are located on its abdomen, so while it is working hard, its gasters remain shut and don’t allow air to escape. This allows an ant to breathe even while it is submerged in water.
