Do ants have lungs?
Ants are some of the hardest working insects in the world. So I wanted to find out how ants breathe? I wanted to learn if ants have lungs, how they breathe, and if they can breathe underwater.
How do ants breathe?
Ants breathe through a system of tiny holes called spiracles located on their body, to be exact, on their abdomen. These spiracles open and close to regulate the flow of air into and out of the ant’s body. When the ant needs air, it opens its spiracles and can take in air from the outside. When it does this, the air goes directly into their gasters. The air then travels through their body to their antennae and other organs, such as their heart, brain, and muscles.
An ant’s spiracles are located on its abdomen, so while it is working hard, its gasters remain shut and don’t allow air to escape. This allows an ant to breathe even while it is submerged in water.
Do ants have lungs?
It turns out that ants don’t have lungs, but they do have a system of tubes called the trachea. Ants breathe through these tubes. The trachea splits into many smaller tubes that end in tiny holes near the ants’ mouths. These holes are called spiracles.
This system of tubes is a lot like a human lung. So it’s not a surprise that ants can’t breathe underwater because they don’t have lungs!

Ants can also survive without air for a few minutes underwater. They can continue to breathe underwater because they have a thin membrane over their body called a body-cavity air space. Ants have a simple way of breathing with a long thin tube called a tracheal tube on their abdomen.
This allows them to breathe through the long thin tube on their abdomen. Ants have a very short life span. If they do not have air or water, they will die in 24 hours.
Can ants breathe underwater?
