How fast can a squirrel run?

And because we’re dealing with a specific kind of furry critter here—the northern flying squirrel—we also need to consider how much lift and thrust it has in its puffy little wings.

What we do know is that a high-speed video of a running squirrel shows them moving at about 17 body lengths per second, which gives us an average speed of just over 3 miles per hour.
That said, some research suggests that if given ample incentive (like avoiding imminent death by oncoming car), they’re capable of bursts of 20 body lengths per second—that’s about 7.7 miles per hour. Even by human standards, that’s pretty darn fast.
